Deep Venous Thrombosis

One of the most highly overlooked areas when performing plastic surgery is an incidence of blood clotting called Deep Venous Thrombosis or DVT. According to a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 18,000 patients a year suffered from cases of DVT. However, in a survey taken, over half of the physician responded that they currently do not practice preventive measures of DVT for their patients.

Are you experiencing a symptom of deep venous thrombosis after plastic surgery and believe that your physician was negligent for the prevention of DVT? If you feel you have a symptom of deep venous thrombosis, contact our medical malpractice lawyer immediately to determine if you can receive compensation for your DVT claim.

Types of measures that may be taken to diagnose DVT include:

Compression Ultrasonography: Using sound waves to take pictures of the patient’s leg.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Produces very accurate results in imaging yet may not be suitable for all cases.
Ventilation / Perfusion Lung Scanning: A scan done with radioactive particles which are inhaled and then examined.
Pulmonary Angiography: An insertion done with a catheter to inject dye which is then examined.
Spiral Computed Tomography: A CT scan where the patient is injected with dye and then computers analyze the data. May not be suitable for all patients.

DVT is very serious condition and there are precautions that need to be taken in order to prevent a patient from acquiring a symptom of deep venous thrombosis to develop. Inherited thrombophilia is an instance of DVT in people whom have the genetic disposition to develop blood clotting. Acquired thrombophilia can occur in patients due to having a previous surgery, trauma, pregnancy, obesity, using certain medications, being immobilized for long periods and having certain blood disorders and or kidney problems.

This is an area that is highly overlooked and many plastic surgeons are failing to use the proper treatments to ensure the safety of their patients. Did your physician take all of the proper measures to safely protect you? If you are unsure then you need to know.
